THE THEATRICAL LANDSCAPE | Berlin | Unit 21 | 2012
This project has sought to define an architecture of the view. This has been explored via the three characteristic viewing techniques displayed by the protagonists of Richard Wagner’s opera ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’: empathetic, fragmented and unified viewing.
Each of these is brought to the fore in turn during the three acts of the performance and is used to inform the immersive experiential qualities of the design. The three viewing techniques are expressed through point views and dynamic routes across a landscape, sited on Auguststrasse, Berlin, which is designed as a setting for both formal and informal theatrical performance.
