Figures from the World Economic Forum esitmate 7.1 million jobs can be automated by 2050. The Makers Collective exists in a future economy where universal basic income and job automation change ‘capitalised labour’ or ‘work’ as we know it. Complete automation will relieve humanity of all labour obligations, triggering a societal shift from mass production to play. The Makers Collective is an open source fabrication centre in the post industrial Lingotto area of Turin. Once celebrated as a powerhouse for Fiat aviation and automobile production, almost all of Turins fabrication is now outsourced.

At the Makers Collective the mission statement is Innovation not Volume, Empowerment through Design. Recycling old materials through the site the new architectural components are 3D printed around the studio exterior. Residents of the city learn to use 3D design programmes and 3D printing systems. The architectural fabrication of the city is brought back to those who live there.

Using the internet of things the makers collective is linked to a sensory system in the city of Turin. The sensor system monitors building usage and uses an algorithm to suggest what parts of the city can be re designed.

It is a place not only for production but for learning. The Makers Collective is the centre of a fabrication-focused community, the collective will hold classes daily, workshops and social events. The fabrication society is universal and the education of digital living is open to everyone. The real opportunity is to harness the inventive power of the city. As components are downloaded and re designed people have agency over their own environment, constituting to the evolutionary process.
