Many within Portland see the preservation of its natural beauty as a crucial element in generating future tourism to the island, condemning the impact of quarrying for creating a ‘lunar landscape’, although there are others who regard quarrying as so fundamental to Portlands identity that to resist it would be to deny Portlanders their birth right to an industry that has defined the island since the 17th Century. It is within the context of this dialogue that this project utilises the quarrying and stone cutting process that has defined the island for centuries to create a place of cultural and social significance, that ultimately fulfils the future vision of Portland as a place of tourism and culture.

Based on the phenomenon of sonifying stone blocks by cutting them, this project takes precedent from the pietre sonore sculptures of Pinnucio Sciola to give musical properties to stone through the simple process of stone cutting. Using a process developed during semester one, sounds such as the songs of old quarrymen are encoded into Portland limestone to create instruments embedded into the material of the building itself. The result is an auditoria excavated into the wall of an old quarry, and an extracted variety of sonified stone elements assembled to create the acoustic environment suited to the musical performance within.

Encoding Sounds in Stone

A fundamental concept at the heart of this project is the creative work of the sculptor Pinnucio Sciola, who by cutting slices into stone sonifies them, turning them into musical instruments that produce sounds that variate between eerie and ethereal. The stones are played when friction is applied along the edge of the extrusions that are resultant from the slices into the stone. This causes the stone extrusions to resonate, producing sounds that Sciola believes is the sound of the earth.

The conceptual approach to this building derives from the quarrying and stone cutting process itself. Furthermore this process will be used to encode the sounds of the old quarry songs into the material of the building, sonifying them and turning the concert hall into a functioning instrument.

Plans

Site Plan

The Stone Organ | Isle of Portland, UK | Unit 21 | 2022 sebastian.coupe.21@ucl.ac.uk The environmentally positive ‘stone renaissance’ many hope is beginning within the construction industry runs contrary to an island that has suffered and continues to suffer environmental degradation of its natural landscape at the hands of the quarrying industry.
