It questions levels of chance and control within a design project and uses methods that embrace indeterminate outcomes. A new Federal Constitutional Court of Germany is proposed in Berlin on a site formerly occupied by the Berlin Wall. A single module of the Berlin Wall was modelled and scanned using a homemade 3d scanner. The homemade scanner contained nuances and inaccuracies, producing areas of slippage in the resulting 3d mesh. These areas of slippage, or \u2018opportunistic geometries\u2019 were used to design the key spaces of the new Court. The challenge of the project lay in combining these opportunistic geometries with the functional requirements of the Court.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The home-made scanner<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unit-21.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/link-Sophie-folio-Part-1-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2137\" title=\"Sophiescanner\" src=\"https:\/\/unit-21.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Sophiescanner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allowing for chance in materiality<\/p>\n<p>The geometry used to inform all\u00a0of the spaces of the court and the\u00a0landscape are from the home-made\u00a0scanning technique which introduces\u00a0slippage and distortions to the\u00a0scanned objects. Using a single,\u00a0modelled segment of the Berlin Wall,\u00a0enough geometry is produced in the\u00a0slippage to design the entire scheme\u00a0without the need for repetition.\u00a0Various resolutions can be produced\u00a0by scaling the one scan rather than\u00a0using several different scale models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2139\"
