The project is an ‘Agri-food’ park which includes all the wonders of Italian biodiversity in one place. It includes goods from all over Italy for both wholesalers and visitors. There will be multiple pop-up stores selling Italian produce, wholesale market, supermarket, culinary school, Italian restaurants and vegetable plots. The site emphasises the importance of eating well, bringing fresh natural produce to the locals. Being close to the University of Turin is a great opportunity for the students and staff, as well as the locals, to enjoy the fresh and traditional Italian food.<\/h6>\n
Since the site is located next to the Po River, the water will get brought into the site. Water towers and dams will be used to generate electricity and therefore the building will be self-sustainable. Water gets pumped up to the rooftop pools and gets released through a turbine to generate electricity. Water from the roof water tanks gets release throughout the day which triggers different events to occur at different time of day on each island.<\/h6>\n

The site for my building is located next to the Po River. The site was previously used as a tobacco and a fabric factory. After the factory became inactive, the site was purchased by the University of Turin.<\/h6>\n

The islands are supported structurally by concrete piles. The concrete foundations are situated around the weirs in order to create a permanent structure. Some of the sheet piles from the excavation process will be left in place in order to direct the water into the weirs. Some parts of the foundation are made out of timber piles, allowing water to flow through and cool the structure. Other parts are made out of aggregate and soil which will wear off over time. The islands have been designed to evolve over time since the land that has been built out of sand, soil and aggregate will get washed away by the water current. Strong erosion takes place on the outside bend of a meander while deposition takes place on the inside bend. As a result, the land on the outside bend will erode and the outside bend of the river will start silting up. The erosion of islands represents how nature tries to bring the land back to its original shape. Controls will get put in if the land is eroding faster or slower than the predicted timeline. Specialists will be appointed to inspect the site every 5 years in order to make sure that the island is eroding according to plan.<\/h6>\n
