Choreomata | Berlin, Germany | Unit 21 | 2025
The City of London aims to revitalise the area around the Barbican through the Culture Mile initiative, transforming it into a major cultural and creative hub. Key projects include the Centre for Music, the new Museum of London, the redevelopment of Beech Street into a central cultural axis, and a speculative entry: an artist residency named CHOREOMATA.

Movement lines from a motion catalogue, generated using motion tracking and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanning, are used to rearrange elements of St Giles without Cripplegate Church. The buildings ‘church’ reference pieces are subdivided into groups according to a set of limiting rules. Many iterations of the same process are produced, from which one instance is selected to form a compelling rest space, work space, and exhibition space. Due to the nature of movement notation in 3D space, significant variations in height ultimately determine the overall elevation and depth of the building. An artist residency would bring continuous creative activity to the Culture Mile, fostering engagement between artists, residents, and visitors. It would activate underutilised spaces, blurring the line between exhibition and artist.
