The Berlin-Staaken Regional Museum seasonally repositions itself within the imperceptibly entwined landscape of historical, political, industrial and regenerative significance of the former Berlin-Staaken airfield, where heritage now only remains in faint, almost indiscernible traces. The scheme has been conceived as a scenographic kit of Monomodal Assemblies that operate within this invisible ‘field’ of forces as a conscientious arrangement of free-standing open-air pavilions, engineered to move along reclaimed rail tracks, ‘converging’ and ‘dispersing’ in direct correspondence to the energy output of the Dallgow-Döberitz Solar Park that occupies the site since 2011. Upon leaving their default charging stations across the solar farm, the interlocking building fragments only ‘converge’ as a thermally enclosed exhibition space for a duration sustainable by the surplus solar energy accumulated within their internal batteries throughout the year. At low power, the electromagnetic coupling systems disengage to once again ‘disperse’ the fragments, forcibly maintaining their net-zero operational benchmark by physically and metaphorically ‘turning to dust’, as cryptic objects of intrigue.
